“Pintilie’s second feature, Reconstruction (1969), was notable for its stylistic innovations. Shot in a cinema-verite style that lent it the authenticity of a documentary, Reconstruction is about two students who are forced by a local magistrate to reenact a fistfight they had in a bar. This ‘reconstruction,’ which is filmed as a lesson for young people, ends in tragedy. The film was greeted with critical acclaim at the Directors’ Fortnight screenings at the Cannes Film Festival and is widely regarded as the film which won international credibility for Romanian cinema. In their book, The Most Important Art: Eastern European Film After 1945, Mira and Antonin Liehm have described Reconstruction as “an allegory about cowardice and indifference…absolutely uncompromising in its moral criticism.” They hailed it as not only one of the best Romanian films of the Sixties but also as “one of the pinnacles of European cinema during that decade”.”
